Uganda is preparing to make its return to the Africa Cup of Nations after almost 40 years. The country finds itself in a tough group alongside Ghana, Egypt and Mali. Uganda is also the only East African side to have qualified, further evidence of a worrying trend for the region. When the CAN Afcon Nations 2017 Gabon qualifying draws were made, Uganda had no say on where to be placed finding themselves in group D along with Botswana, Burkinafaso, and Comoros. Between June 2015 and September 2016, the journey has been on course albeit contrasting fortunes. Now 4thSeptember the it all comes to a close at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole. Teams have begun arriving in Uganda's capital of Kampala as the city prepares for to host the IAAF World Cross Country Championship for the first time. Fiji, Australia, South Korea and even the United States are already in the country. Team USA's athletes took to the course Wednesday evening. The twenty eight-member team consists of Kenyan-born Leonard Korir and Olympic 5000 meters silver medallist Paul Chelimo. The Americans hope to perform well at this year's championship after taking silver in the senior men's contest in 2013. America's senior women's team finished fifth in 2015. This is the first time the senior women and men race the same distance of ten kilometers on what has been described as a tough course.
A day after drawing 1-1 with neighbours Uganda, Harambee Stars assembled at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos to prepare for their second friendly. Kenya play against DR Congo, a team ranked 50 places above the Kenyans with Coach Okumbi still on an unbeaten run of 9 matches. Uganda cranes has pulled off a massive 2-1 away win in Botswana to keep the dream alive of Nations cup qualification in 2017. Strikes from Portuguese based Kizito Luwagga, and Khalid Awucho gave the cranes the much needed victory at Francis town stadium this evening, to send the cranes top of group D on 10 points.
